Frequently Asked Questions

What's required to obtain a concealed firearm permit?

State laws vary on requirements to obtain a concealed carry permit. Wisconsin requires four hours of in-class training by a certified trainer as a minimum. In your classes, the instructor will describe the application process to you and answer any questions or address any concerns you have.

What's included in a Concealed Carry Class (CCW)?

Black Sheep Defense LLC conducts training required for a Wisconsin Concealed Carry License. Wisconsin requires four hours of in-class training by a certified trainer as a minimum. Our classes are very comprehensive. We strive to develop the student’s basic knowledge and skill level with firearms, and understanding of the ramifications of carrying and using a firearm. You will be instructed by a Certified NRA Instructor, using the NRA training method of Total Participant Involvement. The basic CCW course provide hands on learning opportunities in the following areas:

  • Safe firearm handling
  • Firearm parts and operation
  • Ammunition and its function
  • Shooting fundamentals and an opportunity to develop them on the range
  • How to select, clean and store a firearm

How long do your classes last?

Wisconsin requires four hours of in-class training by a certified trainer as a minimum. Your class will run from 4 or 6 hours or more, depending on the class you sign up for, and other factors. All of our courses require some range time.

Do class participants have to take a test or shoot a gun as part of the class?

Yes.

Does your class satisfy the training requirements for a Wisconsin permit?

Yes.

How long will it take to get my permit after I apply?

Once applied for the time frame to receive you permit will vary a little. It can take as little as a few days or at times 3 weeks or more. This is dependent upon the state for which you are applying, and their work load at the time. Your instructor will give you more specific information during you class

How long will my concealed carry permit be valid?

In Wisconsin, like most states, the permits are valid for 5 years. Check the states in which you plan to apply and carry.

Is my Credit Card information safe?

Yes. We take your personal information security as seriously as we take your personal security and use a credit card service with military grade security protection.

Do I need to take the class if I am/was in the military?

Wisconsin will recognize your military service as qualification to obtain a concealed carry permit with a copy of a DD-214. Black Sheep Defense strongly recommends that you take classes with us which covers the legal philosophy of the use of force, state reciprocity, and many other factors you will need to consider before you begin to carry concealed. We believe in and teach that there is no such thing as “too much training.”

What do I need to bring to the class?

Be sure to bring proper ear and eye protection, your own Firearm and at least 100 rounds of the proper training ammunition, a safe concealed carry holster, and an equate belt to support your weapon, and spare ammunition.

Your concealed carry equipment must securely retain the weapon and the spare ammo during normal use. Weapons and ammo will need to remain secure in your vehicle unless the instructor tells you to bring it in to the class room. Note: If you do not have a firearm, we can provide you with a firearm and ammunition at additional cost with advance notice.

Does this training qualify for CCW in other states?

The short answer is that it might. Most states accept Certified NRA instruction for their concealed carry requirements. However, each state sets its own specific requirements, and it is not our aim to know or teach other states’ requirements. Our goal is to give you the most current training for Wisconsin.

What kind of firearm will I be shooting?

Bring whatever firearm you have chosen for the purpose of self-defense. Note: BSD strongly recommends a minimum caliber of 9 mm in a semi-automatic pistol, and .38 special for the revolver. Small caliber weapons, pocket pistols and “mouse guns”, while better than nothing at all, are generally not adequate to the task of personal defense in our experience. You, the end user must, of course, make the ultimate choices of what is your best option for your self-defense.

What if I cannot make the class?

The cost of training continues whether you attend or not. Having said that, with more than 72 hour notice, arrangements for another training class can be arranged. In any event, “No-shows” may be charged a “no-show fee” of $15.00.

Do you offer private or small classes?

Yes. Private or small group, semi-private classes can be arranged. Contact us to make your training arrangements.

Do you offer group discounts?

Yes, and in addition, we offer several other discounts including alumni, veterans and others. Call or email for more information.

I am an experienced shooter. Can I take an intermediate or advanced class without taking the basic class?

Yes. We offer a Defensive Shooting Class for experienced shooters of any skill level who wants to learn more about the art of self-defense. We can adjust any class curriculum to suit your needs. See the course information for participation prerequisite.

How old do I need to be to take the Concealed Carry Class?

BSD policy is that you must be at l8 years old. Students under 18 must be accompanied in the class by a parent or guardian. In Wisconsin, you must be at least 21 years old to apply for a permit.

What would stop me from receiving my Concealed Carry Permit?

In general any non-pardoned Felony Convictions, any active restraining order, any active domestic violence issues, and admittance to a mental institution would prevent the issuance of a permit. Each state sets its own standard or requirements.

What is the best way to find out reciprocity for my permit?

You can check the reciprocity of your permit by visiting www.doj.state.us/dles/cib/concealedcarry/reciprocity and clicking on your state.

How often do you have classes?

A class schedule is posted on our web site. Call us if you don’t see a class that suits your needs.
